April 9 – Week 2 – Easter, What God can Do With Our Failure (SECTION 247)
Playing, Praying, and Growing together
Last weeks service
This Weeks ?’s
INTRO:
- How did everyone’s Easter holiday go?
- Does anyone have anything to share on last week’s application question: Is there a tradition you focus on that has lost its original meaning? Is Jesus asking you to refocus on the meaning in maybe a different way?
REBUILD THE SERMON:
- Easter Sunday – What stood out to you from the sermon? Was it different than you expected?
- Kent asked about the worst failure in your life. Set that on a pedestal, a place you can simply observe it without judgement or emotion. How did you respond to it?
Leader hint: Did you respond in one of the 7 ways Kent brought up: Anger, Avoidance, Reengage with a vengeance, Create agreements, Self-doubt, Embarrassment & Shame, Depression & Desperation. - Can someone summarize Peter’s greatest failure?
Leader hint: As Jesus is being crucified, Peter is distancing himself from Jesus, denying he knows Jesus 3 times. Mt. 26:69-75; Mk 14:66-72; Lk 22:54-65; Jn 18:25-27 - … The rooster crows and Peter remembers a conversation with Jesus. We know this as Luke 22:31-34. Read this. This parallels with John 13:31-38
- Does anything stand out to anyone here?
- A decent amount of time passes before Jesus appears to Peter in a fishing boat. Can someone summarize that encounter? This story is John 21:1-14.
- … They eat with Jesus and then comes John 21:15-19. Read this.
- When Peter saw Jesus, how did he respond, even with his great failure front and center in his mind?
Leader Hint: He swam to Jesus. He had to know Jesus would confront what Peter did. Seems like he was EAGER for that to happen. - When we fail, do we seek out Jesus?
- Peter could have just sought forgiveness, and Jesus would have given it to him, but Peter wanted more. When we do seek Jesus do we just seek forgiveness, or do we want redemption?
Application Question:
-
What actionable thing can you and Jesus do to start confronting your greatest failure and turn it in to your Faith Story, to be able to say, “I am the way that I am because when this happened, I, with the help of Jesus, responded in this way.”
Leader Hint: Take some time here. We are talking about things people may not have worked through for years. If nothing actionable comes to mind, consider Kent’s challenge: For 4 weeks, commit to being in a place – mentally, physically, and emotionally – where God could meet with you and you can learn about His love. A church is a good place to start. You can also dedicate some time each day for prayer just around this failure. Write down your conversations to see how you and God work through this over the following weeks. Or do you need to seek out the person you’ve wronged? - Take up prayer requests and pray as a group.
