December 1, 2024 – Regifting Christmas
A Journey Through John the Baptist’s Role
As we approach the Christmas season, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations. But what if we took a moment to reflect on the deeper meaning of Christmas? This week’s sermon at Harmony Church delved into the life of John the Baptist, a pivotal figure who prepared the way for Jesus. Let’s explore how his story can inspire us to re-gift the message of Jesus in our own lives.
Who Was John the Baptist?
The Forerunner of Christ
John the Baptist was a unique and wild figure in the Bible, known for his fierce and fearless dedication to God. Even before his birth, John was preparing the way for Jesus. When Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elizabeth, who was also pregnant with John, the baby John leaped in Elizabeth’s womb, recognizing the presence of the Savior (Luke 1:41-44).
A Voice in the Wilderness
John’s ministry was marked by his call to repentance and baptism. He lived in the Judean wilderness, a harsh and desolate place, yet people from all over came to hear his message. John baptized with water, but he always pointed to the one who would come after him, Jesus, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-4).
The Humility of John the Baptist
Knowing His Role
John’s humility is perhaps his most striking characteristic. Despite his popularity and the large crowds that followed him, John understood that his role was to prepare the way for Jesus. When his disciples expressed concern that Jesus was gaining more followers, John responded, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:29-30).
The Best Man at the Wedding
John used the analogy of a wedding to explain his role. He saw himself as the friend of the bridegroom, rejoicing at the groom’s voice and presence. This perspective allowed him to take a backseat joyfully, knowing that his purpose was to point others to Jesus.
Re-Gifting the Message of Jesus
John the Baptist’s life challenges us to consider how we can prepare the way for Jesus in our own lives and communities. Here are some practical ways to re-gift the message of Jesus this Christmas season:
1. Practice Love of Your Neighbor: Bake cookies or make ornaments for your neighbors, including a note about the true meaning of Christmas and an invitation to church.
2. Do a Prayer Challenge at Work: Let your colleagues know you’re taking on a personal prayer challenge and invite them to share any prayer requests they might have.
3. Daily Devotions with Your Kids: Read a chapter from the Book of John each day and discuss it with your family.
4. Start a Bible Study at Work: Find a time that works for your colleagues and invite them to join you in studying the Bible.
5. Send Encouraging Texts: Forward daily scriptures to friends and family, offering them encouragement and a reminder of God’s love.
Reflection Questions
– How can I make Jesus the center of my Christmas celebrations?
– In what ways can I prepare the way for Jesus in my community?
– What practical steps can I take to share the message of Jesus with others this season?
Life Application
John the Baptist’s life serves as a powerful reminder that we are not the main characters in the story of Christmas. Our role is to point others to Jesus, the true reason for the season. This week, let’s challenge ourselves to re-gift the message of Jesus, knocking down barriers and opening doors for others to experience His love and grace.
As we go about our holiday preparations, let’s remember the true meaning of Christmas and take practical steps to share the message of Jesus with those around us. Reflect on the questions above and consider how you can make a difference in your community this season. Let’s make this Christmas not just about receiving but about giving the greatest gift of all—the love of Jesus.
