LEAD HANDBOOK

Leadership – Excellence – Accountability – Determination

Welcome to LEAD

This is your official invitation letter to join an elite group of leaders in our church in going through Harmony’s leadership pipeline – LEAD.

Please watch the following video & then read the rest of the page.

Over the years, I have noticed a disturbing trend in the church – men seem to have taken less and less of a leadership role.  The church has become about singing songs and listening to a lecture, rather than being the active body of Christ Advancing Kingdom of God with those we live around, work with, and love.  Men have become disinterested and disengaged.  Our church is interested in correcting this trend.  I am writing you to ask you for a very specific commitment in a moment.  But I want to be clear upfront about my purpose, my goal is to turn up the temperature in the hearts and minds of men about their role in the church, in their families, and in the community.  With your help and other men like you, I believe we can reverse this trend and see men making a significant difference in their families and in the church

With all of this in mind, I am writing you to formally invite you to be a part of our next LEAD group.  LEAD stands for Leadership, Excellence, Accountability, and Determination.  The goal of LEAD is to challenge and develop your God given leadership potential to impact the world around you.

What will we do at LEAD?  Each week you, along with the other men in the group, will meet together Sundays from 8:30-9:25am for a 8 week period to study through the book “Lead Like Jesus” (We will have the book for you.)

I am including a LEAD Handbook to give you a more comprehensive idea of what it means to participate in LEAD – please read it.  You are one of a handful of men that have been invited to participate in this session of LEAD.  This invitation is a real honor and something not to be taken lightly.  I personally believe LEAD has the potential to be revolutionary for the men who participate if they fully commit to the program.

Please understand, that because this group is “invite only”, we have high expectations of those who participate.  You will be asked to sign a covenant (see handbook) that outlines the expectations.  If you choose to participate, you’ll be asked to commit to faithful attendance during the 10-week period the group will run (the group may decide to change the schedule if it works best for everyone to avoid breaks around school schedules, etc.).

Please respond to this letter by submiting the form below to let me know whether you will be joining this session of LEAD.  If for some reason this round doesn’t work for you and you’d like to be considered for the next session of LEAD, please indicate so.

The What & Why of LEAD

2 Timothy 2:20-21

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble.  If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.“

LEAD Purpose:

A 8 week leadership intensive for the men of Harmony Christian Church, to study biblical leadership (discuss and sharpen one another) for our homes, work place, and ministry in the church.

LEAD Goal:

To promote biblical leadership among men and raise up groups of men who are competent to lead in all arenas of church life at Harmony Christian Church (Connect Groups, Classes, Outreaches, etc.) if they so choose

LEAD Vision:

To raise the temperature of what it means to be a Godly leader as a man.  This is not about position, authority, or power – this is about us as men learning to follow Jesus in such a way that we in turn become strong leaders for our family, our church, and our places of employment.  To challenge one another, and to be challenged by Jesus

LEAD Commitment:

  • As men we will covenant to meet weekly to study & participate in Leadership Development.
  • Time Commitment: 1 hour/week for 8 weeks.
  • You will be asked to lead at least one devotion on a rotating schedule.

LEAD roles:

Each LEAD group will need the below positions filled from within the group:

  • Facilitator: facilitate discussion weekly for the group around the topic and keeping the discussion moving.
  • Communication Director: Communicate with the group weekly – prayer needs – service opportunities – any changes to the schedule
  • Spiritual Coordinator: Coordinate who will be leading what devotion each week.  It is expected that each individual in the group will take it upon themselves to lead at least one devotional thought for the group using the scripture for that week (see the LEAD schedule on the following pages).

LEAD Resource:

Lead Like Jesus (purpose – being a servant leader) (7 sessions).

We will provide this book for you and will ask you to return it to the church upon completion of the group.

The LEAD Covenant

(at our first session we will have a version of the below covenant for you to sign)

I covenant to pray for the other men in this group by name.

I covenant to pray for the unity, health, and mission fulfillment of Harmony Christian Church.

I covenant that I will provide self-leadership in my own life and the life of my family to continue to grow deeper in my/our commitment to Christ.

I covenant to fulfill my commitments to the other men in this group through being on time, consistent attendance, being prepared for discussion (doing my reading, thinking through my material to teach, etc.), and participating in leadership opportunities.

I covenant to look for another man to nominate for this process for the next round of leadership development.  I will personally develop a relationship with this person and make a recommendation for their involvement.

I covenant to take personal responsibility for Harmony accomplishing her mission (Advancing the Kingdom by Living for God and Loving People).  I “own” whether we win or not in this endeavor and will actively embrace and live out this mission in my day-to-day life.

I covenant to take personal responsibility for the health of Harmony Christian Church, doing what I can to ensure the unity of the church around the mission (Advancing the Kingdom by Living for God and Loving People).  I will not put up with people bad-mouthing leadership or the church if they have not personally reached out to address concerns.  I will be a healer, not a divider.

I covenant that what is shared personally in LEAD stays in LEAD – I am worthy of your trust and confidentiality.

I covenant to be personally involved in outreach events and opportunities that Harmony Christian Church provides and orchestrates.

I covenant to look for and seize opportunities to lead.  I will be a proactive man who volunteers to go 1st when the church is involved, rather than waiting to be asked.
